I logged into the site and looking through the Smart+ popup I saw that I had an ata error count = 24.This system has only been up a few hours. I've spawned a long self-test of the drive but it won't be done for several hours.

NETGEAR ReadyNAS have an inbuilt disk test facility. We are one. The next day I got the same email message … except the reallocated sector count had grown.

I've read that this can be caused by bad cabling, and mine is a mess; could that really be the issue? Just curious if this should be a cause of concern. That's not the case here though.1 ATA error is significant , AFAIK, drives will be replaced if they have 1 ATA error.

I would start by looking at the backup configuration to make sure that's right, testing the USB disk, and looking at what's being baked up. The price is quite reasonable (about the same as I would have paid for shipping anyway). Your drive is reporting a few interesting things. Your experience is almost word-for-word the same path I took over several months to discover what the issue was. The log is from the HD right? And if that happens, not even 99% good sectors will do me any good xDI was thinking, if there are problems with the controller on the HD, then windows should see
